Rumblings Sullivan County NYS Dept of Health Office Slated to Move to Orange County

There are rumblings that New York State is planning on closing The New York State Department of Health Office in Monticello and merging it into the Orange County Office in Middletown.

Informed sources have noted that a recent finding on Open Book New York notes changes in the Monticello lease.

Such a move would be a devastating blow to Sullivan County.

We currently rank 60 out of 62 Counties in New York State making us one of the unhealthiest places in the state to live.

If located in Middletown, the response to childhood lead cases, food and water borne outbreaks, and other health emergencies will in all likelihood be delayed.

If this move is not stopped, twenty-five employees will be relocated to the Orange County Office. Taxpayers will be footing the bill for increased state paid travel costs for employees, locational pay increase for all staff, and lost efficiency.

The irony in all this is that Acting New York State Health Commissioner Mary Bassett has deep roots to Sullivan County. Her mother Priscilla is a well-known Community Activist.

Legislature Chairman Robert Doherty last year said it was his priority to improve our health rankings.

Sullivan County legislators, Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther and State Senator Mike Martucci must do everything in their power to prevent the Sullivan County Department of Health Office from closing.

All residents are urged to contact the following New York State Officials besides our local officials.
