A Time for Thanksgiving 2020

Thanksgiving has always been a time when we try to make lives better and reflect on all we should to be thankful for.

This year, even though we cannot and should not hold big gatherings, we can be thankful that we can still share the joy of Thanksgiving with our family and friends through modern technology.

Although none of us can understand how we got to the place we are at – we all learned a good lesson in life and how we must live it to its fullest and be thankful for each and every day.

We must all be thankful that we live in the United States of America – The land of the free and the home of the brave. We just saw our great democracy in action as we held fair and honest elections.

I am thankful for the resolve of Sullivan County residents who are always willing to help those in need.

This year we have so many people we must all be thankful for.

Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers providing thanksgiving meals to those who otherwise would have none.

Our firefighters, EMT’s, members of civic and religious organizations continually go above and beyond their call of duty for us.

This year we have a long long list of people we must all be thankful for. From our medical community, doctors, nurses, home health aides to our new list of first responders – employees in supermarkets, department stores, and restaurants – words cannot express what you have done for us during this crisis.

We must be thankful to all the members of our law enforcement community and those in the military who constantly risk their lives for us. These people also have a spirit in them that words cannot express.

Thank you to our hardworking underpaid prosecutors who could earn so much more in the private sector. Thank you to all our hardworking members of our Judiciary.

Thank you to our dedicated Sullivan County workforce.

The problems facing Sullivan County are very real, and it has become increasingly hard for people to enjoy a quality of life here. Hopefully that is beginning to change, but the answer should not be to sell our nursing home or home health aide agency.

Although I am often critical of our elected officials – I am equally grateful for all they do.

Hopefully the “Mouth That Roars” column and the Sullivan County Post Facebook group assists in creating honest dialogue throughout Sullivan County.

The holiday season is a time we should embrace all fellow human beings no matter their race, creed, color, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status. Let’s all be thankful for what we have and share the joy with those around us.

Let’s care about our family, friends, neighbors and strangers – wear a mask and social distance. We can all get through this so one day we can return to a form of normality.

Let’s all keep the spirit and meaning of thanksgiving alive all year long.

Gracie is thankful for her loving home and asked me to please remind everyone to leave out an extra bowl of food for that stray cat.

Happy Thanksgiving!
