The Gift of Giving

The people of Sullivan County continually show their warm hearts and generosity time and time again during this holiday season.  So many are working hard ensuring those less fortunate enjoy a fulfilled holiday.

As mentioned last week the “A Dose of Kindness” organization will be hosting their third annual free Holiday Community Dinner on Sunday December 18th, at 4:30 PM at the Ted Stroeble Center in Monticello. This dinner is open to the entire community as they aim to feed the homeless, elderly, and less fortunate, as well as anyone who may be alone for the holidays.

A Dose of Kindness is looking for donations of either financial, food, or new toys to ensure the success of the event.

Contributions can be made by contacting Carlos Torres at 845-741-7475 or Devon Spagnoli at 845-423-0988, or by visiting the facebook site at www.facebook.com/adoseofkindness1

Bikers Against Sexual Child Abuse has been busy collecting toys at the Liberty Diner and Liberty Dunkin Donuts for their annual toy drive for the kids. For more information contact Bikers Against Sexual Child Abuse at (845) 807-8139.

The Secret Elf Society of Sullivan County is busy with their annual “Secret Elf” mobilization.

Members of The Secret Elf Society of Sullivan County have been brainstorming for the last three months about what they could do this year to put smiles on faces of children in need.

After learning of an incident at BOCES in Ferndale – they made their decision.

One of the Members of the Secret Elf Society told me they reached their determination after learning of a BOCES student who forfeited his own lunch money on several occasions to assist another student after he determined that his friend was starving.

A member of the Secret Elf Society told me that “kids who cannot pay can charge up to five meals. BOCES is NOT at fault here! They are under severe budget constraints just like everyone else. After meeting with them, I know they would feed every kid properly if they could.”

In a means to assist BOCES  – The Secret Elf Society of Sullivan County set up a gofundme account to collect donations to pay off the lunch room debt to feed as many children as they can.

The Secret Elf member who did not want to be identified told me, “I know, it’s not our responsibility, blah, blah, blah, it’s the parent fault that the kids don’t have money in their accounts. The thing is that parents are irrelevant in this venture. The only thing which is relevant is that a kid leaves the lunch room with a hungry stomach and that is wrong, and we can do something about it.”

“When people think about hungry children in schools, they typically think Monticello, Liberty, or Fallsburg, but no one really considers the kids in BOCES, and those kids are typically the neediest on so many levels!”
