Two hidden gems in Sullivan County are the Forestburgh Playhouse and The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop.

The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop productions are held at the Rivoli Theatre in South Fallsburg.

Like many other of our famed institutions, the Rivoli shut its doors because of bad economic times. Thankfully, The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop, our longest standing Community Theatre Group, moved in and it is once again home to live theatre.

The ambitious dream to restore the Rivoli to its original splendor is underway, and the theatre was recently granted Landmark status in the National Registry of Historic Places. The Nartoff-Wells Auditorium seats 475 and is fully heated and air-conditioned.

Founded in 1950, the workshop is a private, not-for-profit organization devoted to providing and promoting quality theatre in Sullivan County. Those interested in live theatre from behind-the-scenes to center stage can polish their craft, while providing countless audiences with hundreds of memorable performances.

Many productions have not only earned critical acclaim, but have also received awards from the Theatre Association of New York State.

Their production of the Musical “Fiddler on The Roof” will begin next weekend. For more information visit the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop website at http://scdw.net/

One of the best in Regional Theatres and Cabarets can be found at the Forestburgh Playhouse. Their productions are truly amazing and afford one the opportunity to see future Broadway stars.

Founded in 1947, the Forestburgh Playhouse is the oldest continuously operating professional summer theatre in New York State. Under an agreement with the Actors’ Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers, the Playhouse employs professional actors, often with Broadway or other major credits, as well as a company of non-union professionals who earn credit toward their own eventual membership in the Actors’ Equity Association.

The Forestburgh Playhouse operates during the summers only, from mid-June through Labor Day, and offers 3 different types of performance experiences: Broadway musicals and plays on the main stage, a youth theatre production performed at 11 AM on Thursdays and Saturdays, and musical cabaret performances presented with dinner in the adjoining Forestburgh Tavern during the week and a late-nite cabaret Fridays and Saturdays after every evening performance.
